The issue of sustainability is more pressing than ever, and while the lifestyle adapts to modern demands, many times the part of aesthetics is sacrificed on the altar of searching for hasty solutions. Using the latest virtual reality technology for the distribution of space on superyacht Futura, luxury design studio Vripack, with its extensive experience in naval architecture seeks to raise the bar in terms of design and operation
“The statement piece is a big crystal palace of glass, which is set neatly on top of the hull so you can see everything on the boat. In practice, this means that everybody on Futura can be doing their own thing, but you’ve still got this consciousness of where your family and friends are.”says Virpack's creative director, Bart Bouwhuis
With sustainability at the fore, Futura is sleek, efficient while standing a third of the height of a comparable 66m yacht. Its flowing, curving lines suggest an elegant femininity drawn from shapes found in nature. A cocoon-like glass superstructure evokes the silhouette of a whale. Extremely light, it uses a diamond-shaped frame similar to the scales of a fish.
Based on the 'split and merge' concept, the Futura departs from the traditional deck layout. The result is a loft-style mezzanine configuration that interlocks and interconnects – outside and inside, up and down, through diagonal side lines. Modular furniture means that every space is versatile. A 20-person dining table is a bold invitation to entertain, as is a DJ booth set up in the upper deck observation area.
With a top speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots. Capable of holding 100,000 liters of fuel, the Futura is an electric/diesel hybrid that makes a difference. Designed to run on biofuel from food scraps, it also features revolutionary bio-based batteries made from salt, sand, water and plants.
“What Futura offers owners is choice. By approaching sustainability as a design challenge, we’re not waiting for owners to request this technology, we’re presenting them with a concept based on sustainable solutions that currently exist. The answers are out there, the supply is out there, owners just need to want it.” referres the co-creative director, Marnix J. Hoekstra
