Royal Huisman, the innovative Dutch shipyard behind the world’s first hybrid superyacht, unveils AERA, a bold departure from traditional yachts. AERA redefines how luxury vessels harness wind, water, fuel cells and biodiesel to cruise nearly carbon-free and anchor for up to seventy-two hours without emissions.

AERA is the result of multi-year R&D by Royal Huisman, sister company Rondal, Artemis Technologies, and Cor D. Rover Design. It combines cutting-edge wind-assisted propulsion, advanced hydro-generators, a unique energy storage system, and an ultra-efficient design. The result is a yacht that sails with unprecedented efficiency, stability, comfort and ease of operation.

At the heart of AERA is a groundbreaking thirty-five-meter wing sail that allows the yacht to go from stationary to sailing in less than a minute. The wing rotates 360 degrees and requires no sheets, winches, or deck hardware. Automation allows the captain to enter the desired course or speed and the system adjusts the wing automatically, adding boost from electric propulsion units if needed.

AERA incorporates multiple clean energy systems. A 580 kWh battery bank powers the yacht’s hotel load for eleven hours. Hydro-generators silently charge the batteries underway. When stationary away from a marina, batteries can be topped up by a hydrogen fuel cell, providing an additional seventy-two hours of zero-emission operation.

While motoring or motorsailing, generators using HVO reduce carbon emissions by eighty-nine percent compared to diesel and power the yacht’s electrical grid and 500 kW azimuthing drive units.

Cor D. Rover designed the bold asymmetrical profile atop twin hulls, providing 694 square meters of exterior deck space for ten guests. Three deck levels create unique living spaces while reducing HVAC needs through smart shading. The uncoupling of interior walls from the superstructure allows a fresh flow of spaces and ultimate indoor/outdoor living.

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman emphasizes that AERA combines advanced technology with ease of operation, allowing confident sailing while offering luxury with reduced environmental impact.

AERA brings the future of sustainable yachting into the present, combining innovation, comfort, and environmental consciousness to redefine luxury at sea.
