The new luxury in yachting is the freedom to choose your nextdestination

New D-Marin data reveals a significant shift in how today’s boaters travel. With Happy Berth Days, the Group transforms the annual berth from a fixed point of reference into a gateway to an entire network of destinations.

For decades, the concept of the home port was one of the most constant elements of the yachting experience. The marina was the base: the place from which a journey began and to which, sooner or later, one returned. Today, however, the data show that this relationship is changing.

Modern boat owners are looking for greater freedom of movement, more flexible itineraries and the ability to combine multiple destinations within the same journey. According to recent D-Marin data, total boat nights across the Group’s marinas increased by 51 per cent year-on-year, while the number of boats visiting more than one D-Marin destination has risen by 28 per cent since 2023. At the same time, overall visits are up 41 per cent. Behind the numbers, however, lies a more fundamental shift: yachting is becoming increasingly multi-destination. Value is no longer defined only by the quality of a single marina, but also by how easily it connects to the next.

From home port to a network of destinations

This is precisely the idea behind Happy Berth Days, one of D-Marin’s most important benefit programmes for annual berth holders.

The concept is simple, yet it fundamentally changes the way a journey can be planned: customers with a valid, prepaid annual berthing contract at a D-Marin marina can enjoy up to seven days of complimentary berthing at other marinas across the network. For those wishing to stay longer, a 40 per cent discount applies to berthing for up to four months, subject to the programme’s terms and conditions. In other words, the annual berth ceases to be a geographical limitation and becomes a passport to a broader yachting ecosystem. This is especially relevant at a time when D-Marin’s network has grown to 29 premium marinas in nine countries, stretching from the Mediterranean to the United Arab Emirates and serving more than 50,000 customers annually.

A programme that anticipated the trend

What makes Happy Berth Days particularly interesting is that it was not created retrospectively in response to a passing travel trend. D-Marin launched the programme almost a decade ago, identifying early on the need for greater flexibility in cruising routes. In recent years, and particularly since 2023, participation has accelerated alongside the rise of multi-destination journeys.

What only a few years ago might have been considered an additional benefit for an annual berth holder now responds to a much more fundamental expectation: the ability for a journey to evolve without being confined to a single port. For a boat owner, this could mean a summer that begins in the Aegean and continues in the Adriatic, a longer journey from Northern Italy to the French Riviera, or a route that changes along the way without that change of plan requiring any compromise in the quality of infrastructure or service at the next destination. This is exactly what Happy Berth Days sets out to offer: freedom of choice while maintaining a consistent level of service across the same network.

Greece within a broader yachting route

For the Greek market, this approach is particularly relevant. D-Marin’s network in Greece includes Zea, Lefkas and Gouvia in Corfu, creating key points of reference across both the Aegean and the Ionian.

Greece’s geography has always favoured island hopping. What is changing today is the ability to place that experience within a broader international network, allowing boaters to plan longer Mediterranean itineraries beyond Greek waters. The home port therefore takes on a different meaning. It remains the place to which the boat returns, where a relationship of trust with the marina has been established and the owner knows the services and the people. It no longer needs to define the limits of the journey.

Premium yachting, redefined

Luxury in contemporary yachting is no longer defined solely by the standard of facilities or the exclusivity of a destination. Increasingly, it is connected to flexibility, ease and continuity of experience. For a boat owner, this means being able to change destination, extend a journey or plan a new route, knowing that the next marina can form part of the same ecosystem with a consistently high standard of service.

This is where Happy Berth Days moves beyond the logic of a conventional commercial offer. Its real value is not simply the complimentary berthing days. It is the ability to turn a network of premium marinas into one seamless travel landscape.

And perhaps this is the clearest indication of where modern yachting is heading: less around the question of “where the boat belongs” and more around how far it can take you
