The most basic and essential piece of winter clothing equipment for sailing is the sailing jacket. This jacket is a heavy duty raincoat. Visually, someone might think that is a simple jacket, but there are several important differences, especially in good saling jackets. Particular attention should be paid to the seams, because on the boat we are not going to face just some sporadic drops, but entire waves, many times for several hours in a row. The zipper also should be covered, usually with a piece fastened with Velcro, so that it does not allow water to get in. In some cases it would be good to be waterproof. In addition, it is desirable that the inside of the sleeves have aqua stops, which are nothing more than rubber seals.
The collar of the sailing jacket should be high enough to prevent water insert, and a built-in hood is necessary. Also, the collar must have aqua stops and an additional neoprene lining for optimal protection.
Reflectors are also necessary to facilitate identification in the event of an accident. For the same reason, it is imperative that the colors of the sailing jacket are bright: yellow, red, orange. It is good not various hanging, (such as the common jackets have to tighten the hood or the bottom) as they can become dangerous and cause accidents if they got entangled on some surface.
The quality of the jacket is very important, it should be breathable, in order to allow the body to breathe. Simple nylon raincoats cause sweating, and that is risky to get cold.
