It all started from an idea by German actor Daniel Roesner who commissioned iYachts to design a catamaran with an emphasis on sustainability and respect for the environment. The 55-foot catamaran's name is Hu'chu 55, it will be built from recycled materials and powered by an emission-free propulsion system to reduce its environmental impact.
The name Hu'chu shows both Roesner's roots and passions: "Hu" is short for his mountainous hometown of Hunsrück, while "Chu" refers to a spot north of Malibu where he fell in love with the ocean and surfing
The actor commissioned iYachts to create a robust vessel on which he could explore the world with the ability to sail across all latitudes and longitudes, produce films and conduct ocean research.
It is made from 90 percent scrap aluminum sourced from discarded license plates, street signs, cosmetic boxes and other trash. Without a single kilogram of primary metal, the material has a much lower environmental impact than regular aluminum. The yacht will also incorporate natural fibers, recycled wood and recycled cork. The green ethos extends to the propulsion system. Two electric motors will provide additional power without emissions. The battery pack, which has a capacity of more than 100 kWh, can be recharged with integrated solar panels or hydrogenation to ensure true autonomy on water. The clean, green energy will be used for everything from growing vegetables in the garden amidships to powering equipment in the film studio.
The sail system also allows for quick and easy handling from both the helm position and the rear cockpit. Roesner plans to travel the world and make documentaries about the world's oceans.
As for when the Hu'chu 55 will be ready to sail the seas, the team is currently trying to find a shipyard with aluminum expertise to turn the dream into reality.
