At the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 we attended, Azimut and Volvo Penta presented a major innovation in the world of yachting: the Seadeck 7, the first yacht in the world to combine Volvo Penta IPS technology with a hybrid-electric system, has engines diesel, 160 kW electric motor and batteries with pilot the hybrid electric package D13 IPS of Volvo Penta. This combination allows hybrid operation without a generator.
With the ability to cruise silently at speeds of up to 11 knots in full electric mode, the vessel offers up to 12 hours on anchor of zero emissions.
"Our goal is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, especially in the popular segment of boats under 24 meters," said Giovanna Vitelli, President of the Azimut|Benetti Group. "Volvo Penta's hybrid-electric package enhances usability, reduces fuel consumption and elevates the on-board experience."
The hybrid propulsion system, a pilot of Volvo Penta's recently announced D13 IPS hybrid-electric package, guarantees a smooth transition between power modes. Features include near-silent sailing at low speeds, silent nights aboard using batteries and Joystick Docking in Electric mode for smooth docking and departure.
Compared to traditional boats, the Seadeck 7's technology package, the extensive use of carbon fiber (up to 40%) and the boat's superior design performance can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% in a typical year of use.
This innovative yacht demonstrates an environmentally friendly approach through Rina Green Plus Platinum certification, underscoring Azimut's commitment to sustainable innovation.
"Partnering with Azimut aligns with our vision to transform the boating experience while embracing technological advancements," said Johan Inden, President of Volvo Penta Marine Business. "Seadeck 7 marks a leap forward in hybrid technology, promising ease of use for owners and captains alike, facilitating the drive towards sustainability in sea travel."
The hybrid-electric package incorporates smart technology, including Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) and innovative driving modes. These enable Joystick Docking, Joystick Steering and Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) in both Pure Electric and Hybrid modes. The Glass Cockpit system provides an interface that displays driving functions and battery status. The EVC system enables engine monitoring and data sharing, ensuring premium support through Volvo Penta's global service network.
The Seadeck 7 is available for pre-order, with delivery starting in 2026.
