Ocean Independence Unveils Project Kumu: A Visionary 46-Meter Hybrid Superyacht

Ocean Independence has introduced Project Kumu, a stunning 46-meter hybrid-powered yacht concept designed by the talented team at D-ID in Winchester, with naval architecture provided by Southampton-based Lateral Engineering. Initially envisioned for a client desiring a fast day-boat style superyacht with a sleek sailing yacht aesthetic, the project underwent significant evolution after the client chose not to proceed.

The Project Kumu concept is a harmonious blend of modern innovation and timeless elegance. The design incorporates an optimized hull for superior efficiency and a hybrid propulsion system that ensures silent operation at anchor—a feature catering to eco-conscious luxury travelers. The main deck’s aft section spans approximately 200 square meters and features fold-down platforms and adaptable social spaces, creating an ideal setting for relaxation and entertain.

An open-plan saloon seamlessly connects to an external bar and deck areas, emphasizing a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces. Large windows, a skylight, and an adaptable layout define and separate living areas using natural daylight, eliminating the need for rigid boundaries. The main deck interior includes a dining area that accommodates up to 14 guests, with ample natural light enhancing the overall flow of the space.

The yacht’s accommodation plan is thoughtfully arranged to provide ultimate comfort and privacy. The main deck’s bow section hosts three expansive cabins for the owner and VIP guests, while the lower deck offers two additional guest cabins alongside a multi-function saloon with a balcony door. Enhancing the yacht’s leisure offerings, the sun deck boasts approximately 285 square meters of space, made possible by integrating the wheelhouse into the deck structure. The total volume of the yacht is under 500 GT, allowing it to sleep up to 10 guests in five staterooms.

Project Kumu is engineered for long-distance journeys, with an impressive range of 3,500 nautical miles when cruising at 12 knots—perfect for transoceanic routes such as those between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. The yacht also delivers a top speed of 20 knots, ensuring swift travel between destinations. The vessel features storage for two tenders, a 7.5-meter tender on the aft deck and a 5.5-meter tender in the toy garage, which also provides ample room for diving equipment, sailing dinghies, Jet Skis, and bikes.
